Embracing Change for Functional Wellness

embracing change mindset what is functional medicine Oct 24, 2023

In the realm of health and wellness, embarking on a journey with a functional medicine provider is not merely a shift in medical approach; it's a commitment to change.

Full stop.

Functional medicine operates on the fundamental principle that being healthy means an inter-connected approach involving our mind, body and soul, and addressing the root causes of issues requires a holistic transformation.

As a primary care provider, I witnessed this palpable moment in almost every appointment where the patient would sort of hand over their body and ask that I heal it, and then give it back. I would diagnose their cluster of symptoms, offer a prescription, and request for them to follow up.

This isn't how functional medicine works.

Making real health changes to the root causes of your disease (not merely treating symptoms with a drug), takes work and dedication to a life that serves, supports, and sustains the body, mind and soul of a human.

Change is hard for everyone (not just for your 7 year old that doesn't like the new light fixture you hung).

Some of the changes you can expect to encounter include,

1. Shift in Mindset: The first step towards embracing functional medicine is a shift in mindset. Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on symptom management, functional medicine delves into the underlying imbalances and dysfunctions in the body. Shifting your mindset means acknowledging that true healing involves a comprehensive understanding of your body's interconnected systems.

2. Personalized Lifestyle Modifications: Functional medicine is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It's about tailoring interventions to your unique biology, genetics, and lifestyle. Being open to change means recognizing the importance of personalized lifestyle modifications, whether it's adjusting your diet, incorporating specific exercises, or adopting stress management techniques. This adaptability is key to unlocking the full potential of functional medicine.

3. Commitment to Testing and Analysis: Functional medicine relies heavily on advanced testing to gather detailed insights into your health. From comprehensive blood panels to genomic testing, these analyses provide a roadmap for understanding your body's intricate functions. Committing to completing these tests, accepting the wealth of information they uncover, and then being ready to make changes based on what we uncover is paramount.

4. Active Participation in Your Health Journey: Functional medicine is a partnership between you and your provider. It necessitates active participation in your health journey. This involvement includes adhering to personalized treatment plans, incorporating recommended lifestyle changes, and actively communicating with your functional medicine expert. Being ready to change signifies a commitment to actively engage in your path to wellness.

5. Holistic Approach to Health: Functional medicine takes a holistic approach, considering the interconnectedness of the body's systems. It views health as a dynamic balance, requiring attention to various aspects of life. Embracing change means acknowledging that true well-being involves not only physical health but also mental, emotional, and social aspects. It's a holistic transformation that extends beyond the conventional medical model.

6. Patience and Perseverance: Achieving optimal health through functional medicine is a journey, not a quick fix. Being ready to change involves cultivating patience and perseverance. Healing may take time as you address underlying imbalances and make sustainable lifestyle changes. It's a process that requires dedication, but the long-term benefits are well worth the effort.

7. Empowerment and Education: Functional medicine empowers individuals by providing a deeper understanding of their bodies and their health. Being ready to change means valuing the education and insights gained through this process. It's about becoming an informed advocate for your own well-being, equipped with the knowledge to make conscious choices that positively impact your health.

Readiness to change is the key that unlocks the transformative potential of functional medicine. You may need to examine your beliefs surrounding medicine and what it means to you. Some of us have grown up believing healing is handing over your body to a medical provider and taking it back when it's fixed, or taking a medicine that will suppress a symptom. Functional Medicine takes real, daily, work and a commitment to shifting your mindset, embracing personalized interventions, actively participating in your health journey, and understanding the holistic nature of well-being. By being open to change, you pave the way for a profound and sustainable transformation that goes beyond symptom management, leading to a life of radical health and vitality.
